Rare Early Edition'90 Élysée Vernissage Collection Limited Edition Pen
Rare Early "Edition'90" Élysée Vernissage Collection Limited Edition Pen aka Edition No. 1, Cloisonné enamel art over gold grid. This gorgeous example Edition'90 is the capped rollerball version. The following 3 paragraphs of historical information about these collectable pens have been compiled from the Dean Meyer Élysée pen Identification Guide and from internet available information. I cannot attest to the accuracy and it is presented here for background information only. Élysée's first Limited Edition pen began a series of three Editions in 1993 using Chinese Cloisonné art as the basis for the pen design. Each pen was the commissioned work of an artist, intended as an extended series, called Vernissage. The first pen in the Vernissage series, the very geometric Edition No 1, was created by artist Karl Diesner.

He says the purpose of his work is to activate our vision. He prefers to work in bright colors and with geometric shapes, and this definitely shows in the design. This pen, the most abstract of the series, is a mosaic of pastel colored geometric shapes. Black, blue, pink, and white marble come together in squares, rectangles, triangles, and other geometric shapes interchange with bright gold diamonds with a black cross design. The busy design and the blue and pink combine in a bright Piet Mondrian-like gridwork that is similar to many modern Chinese Cloisonné objects.

A specific Edition'90 pen (labeled Edition'90 on the cap) was released in 1993 before the Edition No 1 labeled Edition No. Based on the attached internet photo (see last photo), you will see that the Edition No 1 (on the left) has a darker pink than the soft pink of the Edition'90 (on the right).

1 nor the Edition'90 have an engraved serial number. As Élysée is out of business as of early 2000, these limited edition pens are becoming harder to find and especially the early Edition'90.

All 3 Vernissage Collection Limited Edition pens were under the Edition'90 general model nomenclature. The Edition is based on the Parthenon, Élysée's top pen line, of all brass construction, and is a long and slender pen, 5 5/8 inches capped and 6 1/8 inches posted. These are solid and substantial pens, yet nicely balanced, capped or posted. The cap snaps securely both on the section and the barrel end.

The pen is decorated using Chinese Cloisonné technique with enamel fill over a gold grid, and uses 18k gold plating which I understand from internet research is plated, not electroplated, which should make it wear well. The gold "winged" cap top makes this definite pocket jewelry that hints at the flashy pen hidden in your pocket.

The Élysée Limited Edition pens are good daily users with a very arty flair. This gorgeous Edition'90 capped rollerball pen appears to be in very good condition.

The enamel looks very good, only a few minor scratches, and the gold plating is very nice, with only a bit of minor loss at the very end of the clip. Please review all photos and zoom in for detail. Colors may vary when viewed on different devices. NOTE: The last photo of 2 pens is an internet photo associated with the general Élysée Limited Edition historical description presented above, and NEITHER PEN is the example offered here for sale.
